I believe the default version with Solaris 9 is 5.6.1, while 5.0X is
default for Solaris 8. Not hard to build it, of course. I don't know
about AIX.

What area of configuration and installation do you mean? Replacing the
configure script? I've been using the tools/slony_setup.pl, and it's
been very useful in getting started, once I realized I had to rip out
all the db creation stuff in the beginning of the resulting bash file (I
already have a schema defined on each slave). In the perl world I assume
a program like slony_setup would just do the work directly, rather than
generating a shell script?

Is expanding the capabilities of slonik an alternative to perl for
management tasks? A set of utilities would be cool, but I haven't fully
explored what's available in slonik yet.

If you went the perl route, including the appropriate PM for postgres
access would be helpful, and cleaner than what slony_setup.pl has to do
now.

I say that Solaris 8 and AIX 5.1 do not have such a Perl. The best you
can assume is 5.003. And even then, you might not have it.

In the future this spectacle of the middle classes shocking the avant-
garde will probably become the textbook definition of Postmodernism.
